Project: The Old Gaol and Moothall

Client: The Historic Hexham Trust/Tynedale Council

Location: Hexham, Northumberland

Approximate Project Value: £160,000.00 (£1.1 million overall)
An interpretive design scheme focusing on law and order and everyday life in the pre-unification Border region between England and Scotland. The displays concentrate on the Border Reivers in particular as a product of the wild and lawless region between the two separate monarchies.

Stories of everyday life in this harsh and dangerous area are told through graphics, illustrations and audio displays. A typical Riever raid is dramatically depicted through a video reconstruction (including the ‘designer’ being shot as part of the action).

The displays were designed to compliment the 14th century building, the oldest surviving purpose built gaol in England, preserved as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
